With its fourth offering and third EP, Eisenblut continues to expand the strange, frost-bitten garden it has been cultivating within the Mystic Glory Order collective. Where previous records chiselled raw lo-fi aggression into jagged monoliths of black metal, “Last March of the Shattered” dares to soften certain contours while keeping the Eisenwinter style core wrapped in harmonious flesh, where the glimmer of pop melodies and surf rock inflections bleed into the storm winds of black metal. This collision of sensibilities, both savage and saccharine, do not dilute the spitefulness, it lends instead the work an uncanny brilliance. This record is a haunted reimagination of Eisenblut’s trajectory. If “The Struggle for Existence” stretched towards unexpected horizons with audacious covers and brisker dynamism, and if “Swarming in Decay” and “Shadows of the Storm” were monuments to lo-fi purity, this new work exists in the liminal space between, not a retreat from harshness, but a strange flowering of contradiction, both feral and playful, both ruinous and oddly solar.
